A few minutes away from La Fortuna, in a small town called Jaurí there is Don Juan’s Farm. A place raising the concepts of organic products and sustainable development in order to become a fully green farm. Visiting this place is a great oportunity to learn about many processes that keep working a farm.
This adventure is one of the most educational activity you will find in Arenal, but opposite to what many believe, you can have lots of fun while learning. Don Juan’s Farm tour is a clear example of it.
More than 30 different crops with strict organic techniques are grown, livestock semie-confined, methane gas production, tilapia and manufacture of organic compounds, including worm farming, biofermenter, fertilizers, fruit, herbs, among others which you can know face to face and even help to produce them.
This tour will give you the chance to take a look at rural life like never before. You’ll learn the journey aliments you put on your table do.
You’ll have the chance to be part of cassava harvesting, picking some vegetables, fresh fruits for homemade refresment, fresh spinach and other necessary ingredients which you will later have for lunch or dinner. This dish prepared with farm fresh and organically grown products will awake your senses.
The tour includes a pass to the stable, for milking cows. They provide te main ingredient for every day’s cheese and sour cream, in addition to collaborate with production of methane gas and fertilizer. You can easily notice a closed cycle.
Also as a mandatory step is to go to the barn, where sugar cane is processed in a hand mill. You can also enjoy cane juice and cane pieces. Don’t miss the shot of sugar cane liquor also called “güaro”.
This trip will be full of surprises while you taste crops, homemade cheese, tortillas, natilla and medicinal plants famous in rural places. Used to cure illness and diseases, it is a heritage from ancestors.
