A Wildlife Rescue Center
Costa Rica is known for its great diversity as it is home to more than 500,000 species including, insects, animals and plants. However, human development, the destruction of natural habitats for human’s interests and illegal hunting, have led to a precipitous decline in wildlife populations, causing many species to be in danger of extinction.
Proyecto Asís believes that by supporting injured wild animals and by educating people from all over the globe about these animal’s struggles, they will be helping to restore the balance between man and nature. They agree that raising enviromental responsability is a major need today, reason why they are giving their visitors practical information hoping this people will act responsibly in the future.
Every year, many wild animals are victims of human’s hand, suffering from agression, the loss of a mother and the end of its freedom to be kept as pets or to be treated as merchandise, this way, being a deal at the exotic species black market (the third biggest black market of the world).
Luckily, some of this animals are rescued on time and taken to non-profit organization such as Proyecto Asís, where a second opportunity is given to them. This project, actually, is giving protection to more than 70 animals, but this number is expected to increase. Besides the rescued animals are still in captivity, this project is giving them a better life as they count with a permanent veterinary, previously designed diets and more likely habitats.
Activities at Proyecto Asís
This wildlife Rescue Center has opened their doors in order to educate people from all over the world about conservation. If you want to volunteer, meet the other face of Costa Rica in an educational tour, or both, they will be glad to welcome you on their facilities. This center receives no goverment collaboration, to fill what animals aim they struggle to gather the funds. As this is a non-profit organization every single penny you pay will go directly to this animals development and needs.
- Educational tour:
Duration: 1 ½ hours.
Schedule: Monday to Saturday.
8:30 am & 1:00 pm.
The tour starts with an introduction about Proyecto Asis general information and importance. Then you will follow the trails around the reserve, stopping in front of each animal enclosure. Standing in front of this friends, the guide will tell you different facts about each animal like their history, diet and even interact with them.
You’ll get to know a variety of friendly animals such as Perla the lovely White-lipped Peccary, Hércules and Jessica two of the seven comic Spider Monkeys, and the pratting Macaws as well as others not so charming like Paco the territorial Collared Peccary and the rogue coaties.
- Educational tour + volunteering:
Duration: up to 3 ½ hours.
Schedule: Monday to Saturday.
8:30 am & 1:00 pm.
This tour allows you a unique opportunity to not only be near the wild animals, but also help in their rehabilitation. You’ll be part of very important facts and information about present days society, learn the impact over the enviroment that human-being’s actions have. This informative and educational tour will change the way you see exotic species black market or how keeping this animals as pets is perceive.
After that, you’ll have the opportunity to feed this animals. This experience starts by preparing their feast, once ready, you will visit every animal enclosure and be part of the exciting lunch hour. Between games and amusement enjoying this animals happiness will be the sweetest part of this journey.
- Full Day Activity:
Duration: 7 hours.
Schedule: from Monday to Friday
8:30 am to 12:00 pm and continues from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm.
Go beyond with this experience. Help prepare the diet for the resident animals, and in the afternoon, help to clean the enclosures or something else that might be required like painting, making toys for the animals, or help to build a new enclosure. Learn a lot about this friends and share as you learn how great, thankfull and sweet they are.
Get to know truths you will only find out by standing in front of them, such as why this animals are so important, why they don’t deserve the treatments humans gave to them and that actually, they are very related to us even if everyone has believed that this creatures are inferior.
- Full Day Activity + Home-stay
Duration: 1 day.
Schedule: Monday to Friday.
From 8:30 to 3:30 at the Rescue Center, the rest of the day at the host familly house.
This all inclusive home-stay and tour allows you to have a true Costa Rican experience. During the day, you’ll be volunteering at the center where you will learn lots of facts about wildlife and conservation as well as having fun with these animals while you help to build a better world for you, for these friends and for future generations.
In the afternoon, a family carefully picked, will be hosting you and provide authentic Costa Rican meals and hospitality, this way a real cultural inmersion will be part of this trip memmories, guaranteeing an unforgettable adventure.
The programs mentioned above, are short term programs you can join in case you are staying a few days near La Fortuna area, but they have designed some others in order to give a variety of possibilities so the future volunteer can adjust their needs to it. Some of this programs are:
- Science/Vet programs: apply your advanced knowledge as student or professional in the care of animals.
- Longer Home-stay Programs.
- Spanish Programs: in order to taught the petitioner this language. All this programs are blended with volunteering at the refuge and home-stay
- Family Programs: Stay with your kids under 9 yrs. old in a home-stay program. Also volunteer and enjoy tours. Includes Spanish Program and participation in the environmental education programs specially designed for the children.
